Special Issue on Advances in Ontologies

Expert Systems seeks original manuscripts for a Special Issue on Advances in Ontologies scheduled to appear in late 2007.
The use of formal ontologies in knowledge systems has many advantages. It allows for an unambiguous specification of the structure of knowledge in a domain, enables knowledge sharing and, as a result, makes it possible to perform automated reasoning about ontologies. In recent years there has been a worldwide increase in the use of ontologies, both in industry and in research laboratories. This special issue of Expert Systems on the theme of Advances in Ontologies is intended to present the recent advances in ontology research and its applications to a general audience, to provide an opportunity for the broader Expert Systems community to become aware of recent ontology research.
The special issue will seek submissions of papers dealing with all aspects of ontology research, including the theoretical foundations, design, implementation and prototype development issues, ontologies in multi-agent systems and the Semantic Web, comparative studies, and applications, as well as those describing new challenges arising out of applications.
Topics of Interest:
Topic include, but are not limited to the following:
- interoperability in ontologies;
- multi-agent systems and ontologies;
- ontologies and the semantic web;
- description logics for ontologies;
- ontology models and theories,
- reasoning with ontologies;
- ontology harvesting on the web;
- ontology of agents and actions;
- ontology engineering and management;
- ontology-based information extraction and retrieval
- ontology merging, alignment and integration;
- web ontology languages;
- formal concept analysis and ontologies.
Paper Submission:
Submitted articles must not have been previously published or currently submitted for journal publication elsewhere. Longer, extended versions of papers that have appeared in preliminary form in proceedings of conferences or workshops are welcome; the authors of selected papers from the Australasian Ontology Workshop (AOW) will also be invited to submit longer, extended versions of their papers. However, the authors should include a brief statement in their submission to indicate the way in which the article differs from such previously published papers.

Interested authors should submit digital copies (PDF preferred) of their papers, including all tables, diagrams, and illustrations, to Guest Editors by email. Manuscripts should not exceed 15 pages in the journal's style (roughly, in double-column format in font size 11). A free sample issue is available from here; please have a look at a couple of papers in that issue to familiarize yourself with the journal style.
