Department of Computing
Research in the Department of Computing
The Department has around 40 researchers, including both academic staff and research associates, and around 70 HDR students also carrying out research. These researchers work primarily in small to medium-sized groups with a common theme; each group has a webpage for further information, listed below. To give a more detailed idea of the kind of research carried out here, there is also information here on past and current research grants.

Research Groups
-
Centre for Advanced Computing - Algorithms and Cryptography (ACAC)
The focus here is research into algorithms, complexity and cryptography applied to advanced computing systems, with the aim of developing algorithms and cryptographic methods and protocols for applications to advanced information and computation systems.
-
Centre of Australian Category Theory (CoACT)
Category theory is an algebra of widespread applicability for the synthesis and analysis of systems and processes in fields as diverse as physics and computer science, and also mathematics itself. The group works on general category theory, with a focus on higher-dimensional category theory.
-
Centre for Language Technology (CLT)
Researchers here work on the application of computers to dealing with human languages. Foci include information extraction, machine translation, question answering, controlled languages and linguistic annotation.
-
Information and Networked Systems Security Research (INSS)
The focus here is on security concepts and techniques and their application to mobile networked computing technologies.
-
Intelligent Systems Group (ISG)
The major focus of the group is upon logic-based approaches to knowledge representation and reasoning.
-
Programming Languages Research Group (PLRG)
The focus here is on research that builds on theoretical foundations to construct real world software systems. These interests encompass: programming language theory, design and implementation; tools and environments for programming languages; and program specification and verification.
-
Virtual and Interactive Simulations of Reality (VISOR)
This group is concerned with various aspects of virtual reality, such as training simulations, graphics, computer games, and interactive storytelling.
You can also browse the web pages of individual academics: a list of the Department's academics is available here.
