Short Description

COMP249 covers a range of techniques and concepts that are relevant to implementing systems on the World Wide Web.

Assumed knowledge

  1. Basic computer programming skills (COMP125).
  2. Knowledge of algorithms, data structures and the use of data abstraction in programming should be gained at the same time as studying this unit (COMP225).

Learning outcomes

  1. An understanding of how the Internet works and what the Web is good for.
  2. Familiarity with the most important Internet protocols.
  3. An understanding of the technical background of search engines.
  4. An understanding and practical experience of Web page development and Web page design.
  5. Experience of developing interfaces to client-server applications.
  6. Experience of processing data on a Web server.
  7. An appreciation of contemporary and emerging Web technologies.
