Short Description

COMP349 explores the issues involved in building significant natural language processing applications that require interaction with their users.

Assumed knowledge

  1. Basic knowledge of natural language syntax (COMP248)
  2. Ability to write grammars in a DCG-like formalism (COMP248)

Learning outcomes

  1. An understanding of the techniques required to build domain independent question answering (QA) systems and spoken language dialog systems.
  2. An appreciation of the limitations of domain independent QA approaches, AI-based approaches, and spoken language dialogue systems.
  3. An awareness of the issues in dialogue design, prompt design and grammar writing, and of the importance of error recovery techniques.
  4. Practical ability in implementing a real QA system and a spoken language dialogue system
