Short Description
COMP349 explores the issues involved in building significant natural language processing applications that require interaction with their users.
Assumed knowledge
- Basic knowledge of natural language syntax (COMP248)
- Ability to write grammars in a DCG-like formalism (COMP248)
Learning outcomes
- An understanding of the techniques required to build domain independent question answering (QA) systems and spoken language dialog systems.
- An appreciation of the limitations of domain independent QA approaches, AI-based approaches, and spoken language dialogue systems.
- An awareness of the issues in dialogue design, prompt design and grammar writing, and of the importance of error recovery techniques.
- Practical ability in implementing a real QA system and a spoken language dialogue system
