Starting X-Win32 and getting the Unix XDM login screen

The e6a110 and e6a112 lab PC do not connect to the UNIX servers, so X-Win32 is not used.
In the e6a121 and e6a123 lab PC you can connect to titanic using the X-Win32 program.
In the e6a114 and e6a119 lab PC you can connect to pompeii using the X-Win32 program.

We will use titanic as the example.

Start->Programs->X-Win32->X-Win32

The "XDMCP Select" dialog window will display (if not look here)
In the "XDMCP Select" window double left click on the titanic entry.

The Unix XDM login screen appears.
With Unix logins you have to use the Enter key after entering each of the login and Password fields.
Do not use the tab key.
The password is not displayed on the screen.

        login:  s1234567
Password:  240782#changeme

The titanic Unix (openwindows manager) screen is displayed.

xterm window

After a short time a xterm Unix command window will be displayed (if not look here).

To expand the xterm window to the full screen height, Double Click in the header (where the xterm label is located).

Move the mouse pointer to within the xterm window.
The cursor in the window changes to indicate that the focus has moved to that window.
The command line has a default prompt of:

titanic:~: 1 %
where: titanic is the machine name; ~ indicates that you are at your home directory; 1 is the command number; % is the end of the prompt

To terminate a Unix command use: Ctrl-C
(That is hold down the Ctrl key and press c)

Log out of Unix

To quit the Unix window:

Right Click in the blue desktop area
The Workspace dialog box appears
Left Click on Exit
In the confirm exit dialog box Left Click on Exit
The X-Win32 Unix window will close

Log out of Windows

Use Ctrl-Alt-Del and Left Click on LogOff
Confirm Yes to initiate the log off

Wait for the Ctrl-Alt-Del Welcome screen to appear
You must confirm that you have logged off.
Only in desperation should you switch off the power to the PC

Leave the PC and Monitor power ON - Please!
We have to do things with the PC after the labs close at night.
We can shut down the PC after that work is done.
