Tutorial - Week 11

Answer the following questions and hand in your answers in a text file (Notepad .txt) via WebCT before 9am Tuesday, May 20th.

  1. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is an important sub-industry with consultants paid big money to get a companies' web pages higher in the rankings of major search engines. Find one legitimate strategy that is used in SEO to get improved placement of results.
  2. There are of course the bad guys in SEO. Find one Black Hat SEO technique that has been used and comment on what the search engine providers have done to counter the approach.
  3. Outline how Google ranks pages that match a query. What factors does it take into account for the ranking?

Additional topics for discussion in the tutorial (not for handing in):

  1. What are the three main components of a search engine and what are their tasks?
  2. Explain what an inverted index is.
  3. Describe how Google's page ranking mechanism works.
  4. What do we mean when we speak about recall and precision in the context of a search engine and how are these two measures defined?
