COMP348 Document Processing and the Semantic Web

Practical, Week 13

Semantic Web

In this week's practical session, you will study RDF and RDF Schema, have a closer look at the FOAF Vocabulary Specification and then generate a FOAF description of yourself.

Please do the following things:

  1. Work through W3School's RDF Tutorial and study the syntax and terms used in RDF. Take also a look at the sections about RDF Schema and the RDF Dublin Core Metadata Initiative.
  2. Go the FOAF Vocabulary Specification and have a look at the constructs that are available there to make RDF statements.
  3. Go to the FOAF-a-Matic web page and generate a FOAF description of yourself via the JavaScript application available there. Try to understand the generated RDF/XML format and look up the definition of the FOAF terms in the FOAF Vocabulary Specification.
  4. Use the W3C RDF validator to check the FOAF description and view diagram and triple forms of the data. Link the RDF data to your home page.
  5. This is the last practical session of the course. Use this time to ask your practical demonstrator any questions about past practical exercises.
